General Information
Smooth film faced plywood is a plywood panel overlaid with smooth resin-impregnated film for concrete formwork applications. The film creates an even concrete-contact surface, helping limit moisture penetration through the panel faces and supporting concrete surface finishing.

Materials and Panel Construction
Smooth Film Surface
The film overlay separates the plywood substrate from direct contact with fresh concrete. Its smooth finish provides the contact surface for casting, while the condition of the overlay affects concrete release, cleaning and the finished concrete appearance.
Film type, weight and bonding to the substrate are relevant specification factors. Film colour alone does not determine panel quality or reuse potential.
Core Veneers
The panel consists of multiple veneer layers arranged with alternating grain directions and bonded under pressure. Core species, veneer quality and lay-up influence panel weight, stiffness and machining performance.
Consistent core construction is particularly relevant around panel edges, fixing points and areas subjected to repeated handling.
Adhesive Bonding
The adhesive system holds the veneer layers together during use. Bonding requirements should reflect the expected moisture exposure and working conditions.
Adhesive type, bond performance and formaldehyde emissions are separate specification items and should be assessed against the applicable requirements.
Edge Protection
Panel edges and newly cut openings are potential entry points for moisture. Edge sealing helps reduce water uptake through these exposed areas.
Cut edges and drilled holes should be resealed before use to help maintain panel performance.
Performance in Concrete Formwork
Concrete Contact Surface
An intact smooth film surface, appropriate release agent and correct stripping practices help achieve a consistent concrete finish. Panels should be inspected and cleaned between pours to remove residue without damaging the overlay.
Panel joints, fixing details and installation quality also influence the appearance of the finished concrete.
Panel Selection
Thickness should be selected according to the formwork design, support spacing, concrete pressure and permitted deflection. Thickness alone does not establish a panel’s load-bearing capacity.
Core construction and mechanical properties should also be considered when selecting panels for a particular formwork system.
Reuse Potential
The number of achievable uses depends on core construction, adhesive bonding, film condition, edge protection and site handling.
Correct storage, compatible release agents, careful stripping and prompt cleaning help preserve panels for subsequent pours. Reuse expectations should be assessed against the intended application and maintenance practices.
