A clean face with uniform color, smooth sanding and few visible defects can make a plywood panel look high-quality. However, surface appearance tells only part of the story.

Inside every plywood panel are multiple veneer layers bonded together to form the core. The condition of these internal veneers, the way they are arranged and joined, and the consistency of bonding can significantly affect how the plywood performs during cutting, machining, assembly and final use.

This means that a visually attractive panel does not automatically have a high-quality core.

What Is Plywood Core Quality?

The plywood core consists of the veneer layers positioned between the face and back veneers.

However, simply knowing the wood species used for the core is not enough.

Two plywood panels may both be described as eucalyptus-core plywood, for example, while having noticeably different internal construction quality.
